An equal world is an enabled world. March 8th is International Women’s Day, the day which focuses both on the achievements made by women in the past alongside the challenges that are still facing them today. Looking back on the history of the event helps showcase its significance.
The united nations began celebrating the day in 1977 however there were many events that happened before then that lead to it being officially recognized. Demonstrations by women in the past have been scattered through history. One of the first demonstrations on March 8th was in 1917 in Petrograd, Russia where women gathered to promote peace and demand bread. Ever since that day women have begun to use March 8th to promote their message. Another notable year to mention that helped push us closer #EachforEqual would be 1970 in Boston where a workplace quality demonstration gained much more media attention. Consistent celebration of this event created enough stir to be officially acknowledged by the UN in 1977.
